In this "autopilot era," it is shockingly easy to take the people we respect and care for the most for granted.
Last week, my wife introduced a simple new practice at home to combat this. The rule? Whenever a positive thought strikes you about another family member, write it down immediately and put it in a jar.
In true Egan fashion, we went all out: a dedicated jar and specific coloured paper for each person (Esme, 12; Rose, 11; plus my wife and me).
Sunday night, after dinner, we opened the jar and read the notes aloud.
Honestly? It was incredible. It was a deeply enriching experience that broke us out of the daily routine and highlighted how much we appreciate each other and, importantly, left us feeling motivated to want to do more and repeat the experience.
It got me thinking about work. We hold weekly project retrospectives, but we rarely have "people retrospectives."
I'm going to adapt this for my team. Reflection and appreciation are powerful tools, and a little positive energy can go a long way in a corporate environment.
Does anyone do anything similar to this with their teams to foster individual appreciation?
